Feathered Friends

I was on the bus this morning, and as I pass a young woman in the first seat I see this flash of color.  YES! MORE FEATHERS! And they are brightly colored and awesome!  Maybe she will answer my questions? Click here to see my original “Feathers!” post.  I quickly changed seats so I could sit next to her and prayed she was cool.   Luckily for me she was GREAT gal and the interview began.  Read what she had to say about her feather hair extensions:

LBT:  Excuse me, can I ask you something about your hair?

Feather Gal:  My feathers, right? Yes.  It is so funny because they have been a round for a couple of years in the underground tribal belly dancing community and just now, I am starting to see them.  I first saw them out at Burning Man.  (Burning Man is a new generation hippie-like festival held annually I Arizona).

LBT: What are they made of?

FG: They are made from bird feathers.  After they kill the bird for the meat, they take their tail feathers and sell them for hair extensions and to fisherman.

LBT: What kind of birds?

FG: Roosters.

LBT:  Now yours are bright colors, are they dyed?

FG: Yes, she dyes them.  I’m not sure how.  They come in brown and she has other colors too.

LBT: Nice.  How do they attach?

FG:  There is a copper metal loop. The copper comes in black, brown, blonde and copper colors and she takes like a crochet needle and pulls your hair through the loop and clamps it down around your hair.  Usually people ask for it to be close to the root.

LBT: So there is no glue involved?

FG: No.

LBT:  What happens when you wash your hair?

FG: I wash my hair maybe every other day and it is fine.  I do not use conditioner on the feathers though, it will make them slippery and they might fall down.

LBT:  Oh, I see.  So the same for when you comb your hair? You are just gentle near the feathers?

FG: Yes, exactly.  Yes, and they take the shape of your hair too.  I can curl them or leave them straight, whatever.

LBT: Wow, really, you can use hot curlers on them?

FG: Yep. I do whatever.

LBT: How do they come off?

FG:  You just go the other way with the loop, unclamp it.

LBT:  How much does it cost?

FG: In Manhattan in a posh place it could cost like $50.  But she, [she handed me a business card of her friend who does the feather hair extensions] does them for like $15 for the first loop, $10 after.  There are 3 feathers per loop, some are bigger and some are thin.  I have thin ones over  here [on her left] and a thicker one on this side [on her right].  She isn’t trying to overcharge you, she is reasonable.  I also have some tinsel in there too, its black.

LBT:  Oh really? You can get extensions of tinsel too. Interesting.

LBT: How long do they last?

FG:  They are supposed to last for 3 months but I’ve had these for umm 4 months now.

LBT:  So if you are careful they can last a while.

FG: Yes.

LBT: Now, I don’t know what you do for a living but…

FG: Haha! I work on the trading floor on Wall Street.

LBT:  Haha! Really? That great!  So they don’t bother you about your feather hair accessories?

FG: Ha! No, I don’t care what they think.  But no, they don’t bother me about it.  Now if I had a lot of them, everywhere, maybe they would.  My friend just got married and she had her put them in all over.  It looked really nice.

LBT:  Now your friend who does them, where is she?

FG: She used to live in New Jersey but now she is in Brooklyn.  She will come to your house though.  If you want to throw a party, you have to have at least three girls though that want to do it.  She also does wool and regular hair extensions.

Wow! That was great information from my new friend on the bus.  I’m sorry I did not catch your name but I really appreciate you taking the time to answer all of my questions.  Good luck with your performing and your Wall Street career.  I hope to see you again on the bus sometime.  I want some feathers! ~LadyBowTie  (This interview was not taped so I hope I did it justice pulling it from memory.)
