A couple of days ago LadyBowTie celebrated her 1st birthday. In celebration, I wanted to re-post a bunch of my favorites from this last year for my new readers to enjoy and so you could reminisce with me.~Cori
“American women spend more money on the pursuit of beauty than on their own education.”~Miss Representation
Miss Representation is a documentary on how women are represented and presented in the media. Here is an excerpt on what it is about from the Miss Representation website:
“In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.”
I watched Miss Representation a couple of weeks ago when it aired on the OWN Network. I saved it and watched it with my husband first, because we have daughters but then changed my mind because this is also critically important for parents of sons as well. Second, I wanted to understand my role as a creator of media through LadyBowTie and how I can may impact the self esteem of women (and men). This documentary is still on my DVR and we’ve watched it several more times and had many conversations about it. I hope to share some of those conversations with you soon and hear your feedback on this documentary. Please take a look at this clip, I hope you will rent this documentary and have those conversations too. Please also share this with any teachers in your lives, this might be a very good piece for them as well to share with their students.
