Do You Buy Motivation?

This is my interpretation of a great quote I read somewhere:

A new pair of Nikes will not make you go to the gym.

A Kitchen Aid stand mixer will not put healthier food of the table.

A Kindle will not make you read more books.

A bottle of Chanel nail polish will not get you that promotion at work.

A Harry Winston bracelet will not find you true love.

A Mercedes Benz SUV will not make you a better parent.

No matter how much money you earn or spend on nice things it can never take you the distance you deserve.

How many times have I talked to a friend (or said it myself), “On Monday I’m going to join a gym and get fit and lose weight.” Then over the weekend they went out and bought some really expensive sneakers, the most trendy workout gear they could find and signed up for a two-year contract at the coolest gym in the neighborhood.  Then a month later they complain to me about how much money they spent and wasted on the gym they hate and how their butt still looks fat in their Lulumon yoga pants.  Case in point.  All the money in the world does not equate to action it only equates to more stuff.

Only you can make you a better parent, a more capable employee, make healthier choices, be more cultured and open to being a better partner.  Think about that when you are on the verge of making purchase solely for the purpose of motivation.  You might have the money in your account but do you have the motivation in your heart?

I would love to give credit to the author for this quote that struck such a nerve with me but I can’t for the life of me remember where I saw it.  For the author, my apologies for butchering your piece but know that I was moved by it.  Sometimes its not the exact words but the moral of the story that you take away that matters most.
