In the vast and varied world of thrift stores Housing Works is my favorite. Located on 9th Avenue between 50th & 51st in Hells Kitchen NYC, you are drawn in by its eclectic window displays artfully designed with art deco furniture, vintage housewares and great clothing. You never find that at the Salvation Army (no offense SA, I love ya, but a little merchandising couldn’t hurt). The managers and volunteer staff really take pride in their store and work extra hard to make if feel more like a boutique and less like a thrift store. The staff is incredibly helpful, receptive and offered tons of flattering options to choose from. A+ for customer service. All other thrift stores should take notes on this place. Bravo Housing Works!
Now lets talk about the finds at Housing Works. Well, as with any thrift store you have to dig and I found the usual suspects: Loft, Banana Republic, Levis, etc. All in very good condition ranging from $15-45. On further investigation I found A Pea in the Pod (interesting), Nanette Lepore ($75), Charles Tyrwhitt, Jimmy Choo ($65) Marc Jacobs, Stuart Weitzman ($45) Michael Kors, Coach, BCBG, Marciano, and Dolce and Gabbana ($45). They carry both mens and womens so you can’t go wrong taking a lap around this good cause thrift shop. You never know what you will find and the hunt is half the reward.
