Curating Fashion: G. Bruce Boyer Speaking Event – January 18, 2014 Moravian College

From time to time I’m asked to share exciting fashion events happening in my hometown area, the Lehigh Valley, PA. I’m happy to do that again today.  Please take a minute to review the email announcement I received from the Lehigh Valley Arts Council about the upcoming speaking engagement “Curating Fashion” by fashion writer G. Bruce Boyer.  I encourage all fashion fans and students to attend this event.  There is so much to learn and when opportunities knock in your area, you should definitely take part. ~Cori/LadyBowTie

The Baby Made Me Do It

getbacktowork

Happy New Year and I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season.  I sure did but I’m sure glad its over.  As most of you know I’m pregnant and now into my 8th month and something happened over the holidays that I didn’t expect. Complete brain malfunction and shutdown.  My brain completely stopped working. I mean I would go to my day job, and blindly go through my daily routine but, with absolutely no other thoughts in my head. Completely blank.  I’d go to sit down and do a little LadyBowTie writing, finances or prepare for Spring buying season and I’d sit comatose in front of the computer with absolutely no spark whatsoever.  It was down right awful helpless feeling and so completely foreign.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, this entire pregnancy I’ve been running non-stop from fashion show, to shopping event to launching sales and knocking myself out trying to get on Bing’s shopping feed (which I finally succeeded at after an entire month or trying to learn their system).  All the while going to multiple mid-wife appointments for the baby, working the day job, preparing for Christmas and ignoring  the ever growing to-do list of things I needed to accomplish before this new baby actual comes. Holy smokes!  This was a whole new level of “baby brain”.

The body just knows, it knows when you’ve had enough and can’t possibly do any more and it shuts itself down.  I’m thankful that is all that has happened for me and my baby’s sake.  Stress affects everyone differently and it could of been a lot worse.  Do you remember what happened to that poor Kony 2012 guy?  I tried everything to bring myself out of the funk, I’d take a day or two off from LBT, which usually works, and look forward to that entrepreneurial hum to return and it just didn’t.

Its taken almost 3 weeks for my my brain to recover and now its finally starting to turn again. And not a moment too soon because tomorrow I am going on my buying trip for Spring and about to launch another big sale.

If there are any other Mom or Dadpreneurers out there (or any business owner for that matter), what I’ve learned from this involuntary brain shut down is:

  • Its okay to take a break, and sometimes a longer break than you anticipate.
  • We all need time for our brains to reboot so that new ideas and positive work energy will begin to flow again.
  • Doing the bare minimum is sometimes going to happen.
  • Daily blogging and writing is an exercise in stamina not creativity or intelligence and its really hard.
  • Take care of yourself physically.
  • Know your body’s physical limitations and quickly learn your mental ones.
  • Sleep.
  • Take care of you, your family and then your business and in that order.
  • Not every thing you write or decision you make is going to be perfect and accept it. Learn from it and let it go.
  • Its okay to sit in front of the TV and watch the entire season of Breaking Bad on Netflix if that is what truly helps you relax.
  • Let go of work personal business/work guilt.
  • Don’t let critics in.
  • Once you are rested get back on the horse and keep going.

Even after I’ve said all that I still want to extend my apologies to my readers and customers for not posting new content these last few weeks and being a little quieter on the social media front and I hope you’ll understand.  I’ve accepted that my pregnant body is now forcing me to slow down, really slow down and I’m okay with that.  I just wanted to let you know that I’m definitely still here and I’ve missed you everyday of my little “vacation” but I’m glad to be getting back on track and excited for the upcoming Spring season and I have several posts on the to-do list.   I also wanted to to make you aware that as me and my family prepare for our newest addition, doing all the washing, sterilizing and construction of bouncy seats there will likely be a few more short breaks for me.  As always, thank you for your patience and support.

~Cori/LadyBowTie
