Goodbye Oscar

Oh how you will be missed. If you didnt know, famed fashion designer Oscar de la Renta died on October 20,2914.  I wrote this on my Facebook wall a few days ago when the news broke of Oscar’s passing:

I’ve had the great honor to be a backstage dresser for Oscar de la Renta on at least three occasions for Fashion Week in NYC. His fashion shows were held at a church on the East Side of Manhattan and only open to distinguished guests, buyers and the very top in fashion publications. His shows were extremely classy without any of the celebrity circus that sometimes happens at “the tents”. The backstage, the models and his design crew were always very professional and had superior organization. You could tell this man expected the best but also that he treated everyone with kindness and respect which made you want to work harder not to disappoint him. His designs always left me awestruck and inspired. His gowns particularly were exceptional in design and craftsmanship and, I have to say it, so tearfully beautiful! My boss at these shows told the story as the show was running a wee bit late to start, that Oscar only waits for two people 1) His wife 2) Anna Wintour. We all had a little chuckle as our admiration for the designer grew. This last year I’ve had to decline working fashion week for a number of reasons but now I really regret not getting a chance to work one more Oscar show. Oh how he will be missed.
